Owen Lennox classes 10 January

Dunmow Art Group is delighted to welcome acclaimed portrait artist Owen Lennox to lead a series of six workshops starting in January.

Owen will focus on teaching portraits in oils to members and non-members of the Dunmow Art Group, which meets weekly at Foakes Hall in Great Dunmow.

Dunmow Art Group has a long history of supporting artists and art lovers in Dunmow and the surrounding area and has a regular programme of weekly art meetings and monthly visiting artists.

Born in Sunderland in 1950, Owen graduated from Sheffield in 1978 in Fine Art and History of Art before training as an art teacher. After being head of art in several London schools, he established himself as a painter specialising in portraits in oils.

Now based in Braintree, Owen’s work has included some notable commissions from the world of politics, arts and the media including Baroness Thatcher, Gerald Ford – the 38th president of the USA – The Earl and Countess of Wessex, Sir Tom Stoppard, Dame Barbara Cartland, Lord Archer, Alan Johnson MP, John Hurt and Samuel Becket. Owen has also painted portraits of sporting celebrities including Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Geoff Hurst and Joe Calzaghe amongst others.

Owen has had many solo and group shows in the UK and abroad, including exhibiting with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.

His work is predominantly painted from life, but more recently this has increasingly been accomplished through the use of photographs. His inspiration comes from Carravagio, Velazquez, Rembrandt and Edwardian artists like Philip de Lazlo, John Singer Sargent and William Orpen.

As well as offering workshops for members and non-members, Dunmow Art Group runs a programme of visits to art exhibitions and holds an annual exhibition, on 22nd and 23rd April 2022.

The six weekly portrait workshops will start on Monday, 10 January 2022 at 1pm at the Talberd Room in Foakes Hall, Great Dunmow. The lessons will run for two hours at £5 per session (free for members).

Those interested in coming along are asked to bring their own materials.

Wednesday Evening Meetings Are Back

We had a really fun and interesting talk and two demonstrations yesterday evening from the hugely talented Pauline Hazelwood Artist

Pauline is an award-winning artist having exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists and the Mall Galleries. She paints in oils and watercolours and illustrates and writes her own children’s books on steam engines.

Having also worked in a framers she shared her tips on how to frame your work, styles galleries are currently looking for and how to cut mounts.
We were also able to see her beautiful sketchbooks which are filled with pen and watercolour sketches of people on the Tube, faces and places. Pauline encouraged us to sketch every day to improve our observation skills and our fluidity.

After a tea break Pauline completed two paintings of people moving - a man pushing a wheelbarrow and a girl on a swing - with an emphasis on showing the stresses of the material to emphasise movement and using loose brush strokes with a big brush.

Thank you Pauline for a very entertaining evening and for Sydney Smith for organising. We are taking a two week break now due to half term but will be back on Monday 8th November, 1pm-3pm, with DAG member Mandy Whittick doing a demonstration of abstract flowers in watercolour and pen.

This will be followed on the evening of Wednesday 17th November with an oil demonstration from Paul Alcock Artist who this week won the Supporting All Artists Award at The SAA Exhibition in Nottingham. Congratulations!

Thanks to all who came last night

02 September 2021

Dunmow Art Group (DAG) is pleased to announce a new programme of activity. Like many other organisations, the group has been unable to meet for much of the last 18 months. This, combined with a big change of committee in 2019, means that the programme for the last 2 years has been much reduced. With restrictions eased and some renewed enthusiasm, an autumn programme of talks and demonstrations has been arranged on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 8pm in the Talberd Room at Foakes Hall. The new season will start with an AGM and small social evening on 15 September with an opportunity for members to share some of the artwork they have been doing during the enforced break and a small bring and buy.  It will continue as below:

On 20 October there will be a talk on Framing and mounting your artwork by Pauline Hazelwood

On 17 November Paul Alcock will give a demonstration of oils - Essex and the Thames Estuary

The classes/painting and drawing sessions on a Monday afternoon from 1pm - 3pm during term time will continue. These will start on 6 September with a meadow watercolour.

There will be the occasional Tuesday afternoon workshop from 2-4pm, the first of which will be on 23 November a workshop on collage by Ailsa Lyn

New members and visitors interested in fine art are always welcome whatever their level.
