A Wonderful Evening with Graham Webber

A wonderfully entertaining and informative evening with Graham Webber last night. Giving us an insight into his method of painting a seascape with oils. Seeing the painting evolve from a few scratchy marks to an atmospheric seaside scene was quite lovely.

Graham Webber- Seascapes in Oil Paint Wednesday 23 November

Award-winning landscape oil painter Graham Webber will be doing a painting demo for us on the evening of Wednesday 23rd November, 7.30pm-9.30pm. It will be at the Dourdan Pavilion, in Dunmow at the rec, NOT the Foakes Hall. The cost is £1 for members and £5 for non-members. All welcome. Email dunmowartgroup@gmail.com for further information.

Graham Webber ROI IEA is a professional artists from North East Essex and a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Institute of East Anglian Artists.

Most of Graham’s paintings are influenced by changing atmosphere and appreciation of the landscape itself whether at home in East Anglia or further afield.

He will be painting a seascape for us and we’re really looking forward to meeting him and watching his demonstration.

Welcome Back Bruce Ronaldson

We are pleased to welcome back Bruce Ronaldson, who will be teaching a four-week drawing class starting next Monday 21st November from 1-3pm at the Talberd Room in the Foakes Hall.

Bruce started a drawing class with us before Covid hit, so some of you may remember drawing with him, chairs, self-portraits and upside down drawings.

This of course requires quite a lot of introspection about how you go about things. There are three main areas that Bruce hopes to cover. They are: acute observation, manual dexterity and reflection on what you are doing. If you think about it for a moment, this would be an essential requirement for any craft-based creativity; this not about ‘correctness' but about the creative process.

You will require various materials and to begin with. The basic items are these:

A pencil [2B or softer]
A pen and ink
A rubber
A pad of A5 paper[ [not too flimsy: 300g.s.m./140lb]. Cartridge or a fairly smooth watercolour paper. Bockingford is good.
Some rough sketching paper and something with which to sharpen your pencils. A blade is better than a sharpener.
A ruler/straight edge/set square
A drawing board of some kind: a tray , a chopping board or a sheet of hardboard may suffice. Also tape, Blu-tack or drawing pins.

You will need subject matter:
A cloth to stand things on…anything is better than a Melamine table!
Some pieces of fruit. Maybe more pieces of one or two kinds, rather than one piece of each.
Some chaotic pieces from the garden, such as twigs, stones, dried flowers, or a bird’s nest if you are lucky!
Some photographs of landscapes, preferably not too arty or composed, enlarged to A4 on a photo-copier.

Starting Monday 21st November, artist Bruce Ronaldson will be back to resume a course interrupted by lockdown, teaching a drawing workshop, helping us to look and observe, manual dexterity and precision and clear, reactive thinking. He’ll also show us how to access the creative side of our brains! Tea and biscuits will be there to help Bruce’s drawing course will run for four weeks. Please bring a sketch pad, pencils and rubber.
